More from Wells Cathedral

I visit Wells Cathedral at all times of year, as I live locally, but the electricity in the air during WCA23 is palpable as people engage with and react to the artworks.

As I approached “Listen to Them Falling” a mother and her two children were sat quietly underneath. Like a ticking clock, the development of Juliet Duckworth’s piece through time is fascinating.

“Communication Channel” by Sheena Devitt sensitively echoes the Cathedral space, adding a new dimension to how we understand it. It reminds me of Gaudi’s inverted string model of “La Sagrada Familia” in Barcelona.

To be able to observe the reactions of visitors to the Corpus Christi chapel has given me a new dimension to how I can develop my work. “Matins, Evensong” has three points of tension and resolution in the music and for some people they engage with the meditation, either sitting or standing. I wonder if they are on the Avalon marshes or considering the vaulted architecture of the space. Our reaction to music is very personal, I also really appreciate those who walk straight in and out again!
